Ivermectin in the UK: Status and Access

Ivermectin is a prescription-only medicine (POM) in the United Kingdom, regulated by the MHRA. It is not available over the counter, and the oral formulation has a notably narrower licensed footprint in Britain than in most comparable countries — which surprises many people.

What is actually licensed

Topical ivermectin 1% cream is licensed in the UK for the inflammatory lesions of papulopustular rosacea, and is routinely prescribed by GPs and dermatologists. It is the ivermectin product most people in Britain encounter.

Oral ivermectin has historically had no UK marketing authorisation for general use. Because the parasitic diseases it principally treats — onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis, heavy strongyloidiasis — are not endemic in Britain, there was little commercial incentive to seek one.

That does not make it unobtainable. Where it is clinically needed, oral ivermectin is supplied as an unlicensed medicine on a named-patient basis, typically through hospital pharmacy and specialist import routes.

How it is prescribed in practice

Infectious diseases and tropical medicine clinics are the usual route. Units such as the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in London manage imported parasitic infection routinely and have established supply arrangements.

Dermatology prescribes it for crusted scabies and for institutional scabies outbreaks, where oral treatment is far more practical than whole-body topical application across a care home.

Primary care can prescribe the topical cream freely. GPs are generally reluctant to initiate unlicensed oral ivermectin without specialist input, which is a reasonable position given the prescriber carries additional responsibility for unlicensed use.

NHS scabies guidance places topical permethrin first line, with oral ivermectin reserved for treatment failure, crusted scabies, or outbreak control.

The regulatory position on other uses

The MHRA has stated publicly that ivermectin is not authorised in the UK for treating or preventing COVID-19, and both the MHRA and NICE have advised against that use outside clinical trials.

That position concerns a specific indication. It does not affect the drug's established antiparasitic uses, which continue as described above.

Personal importation

UK rules permit an individual to import a limited quantity of a medicine for personal use, and Border Force may examine or detain such shipments at its discretion. Importing prescription medicines for personal use sits in a grey area rather than a clearly permitted lane, and quantities suggesting supply to others are treated very differently from a single course.

Ivermectin.com ships to the UK. Orders travel as international parcels with customs clearance, and delivery takes longer than USA domestic shipping. Any duties or import VAT are the recipient's responsibility, and we declare shipments accurately.

UK customers should note that the free GermProof spray included with USA orders is not included internationally. GermProof can be bought and shipped to the UK separately, with a two-unit minimum and a flat $40 UPS international postage charge; four or more units gives far better value against that postage. For GermProof alone, ordering direct from germproof.com is usually the better route.

Human pharmaceutical ivermectin, shipped from the USA

GMP-certified human formulations — tablets and 1% cream. Never veterinary products. Most USA orders ship within 1–7 business days, with tracking on every order.

Frequently asked questions

Is ivermectin legal in the UK?

Yes, as a prescription-only medicine. Topical 1% cream is licensed for rosacea. Oral ivermectin generally has no UK marketing authorisation for routine use but is supplied as an unlicensed named-patient medicine where clinically needed.

Can I get ivermectin on the NHS?

The topical cream is routinely prescribed for rosacea. Oral ivermectin is available through specialist services, chiefly infectious diseases, tropical medicine and dermatology, for indications such as strongyloidiasis and crusted scabies.

Why is oral ivermectin unlicensed in the UK?

The diseases it principally treats are not endemic in Britain, so there was little commercial reason to pursue a UK marketing authorisation. It is a matter of market economics rather than a safety judgement.

Can I buy ivermectin over the counter in the UK?

No. It is prescription-only in all forms, and no UK pharmacy can supply it without a prescription.

Does ivermectin.com ship to the UK?

Yes, as international parcels with customs clearance and tracking. Delivery takes longer than USA domestic shipping, and any duties or import VAT are the recipient responsibility.
